The City of Ocean Shores, with assistance from American Community Enrichment and Columbia-Pacific Resource Conservation & Economic Development District (COLPAC), has applied for and been awarded Firewise Community Designation from The National Fire Protection Association. This Designation allows the City of Ocean Shores to develop Firewise Community projects and compete for federal grants to assist with project funding. One such project currently being developed, with assistance from American Community Enrichment, is the construction of a firebreak trail between the dune grass areas and businesses and private residences.
Due to the abundant acres of dune grass growing along the 7 mile length of the City of Ocean Shore’s beach area there is a risk of wild fire especially during the summer months. Evidence of this risk can be seen in the aerial photographs taken by William Capron of a recent dune grass fire. As the photo depicts, the fire came dangerously close to beach-front businesses and private residences.
